People's Consultative speaker denies Anti-porn bill harming the arts

The Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly Hidayat Nurwahid supports the passing of the Anti-Pornography bill, saying it is not aimed at disrupting the arts and cultural tradition.
"This is not a legislation aimed to destruct artistic creativity, nor traditional and customary apparel," Nurwahid told Kompas.com Thursday morning.<>
He argued that the bill was necessary to protect Indonesia's cultural tradition from being divested of its rich values by ulterior motives such as that of the pornography industry.
Most factions in the House of Representatives are pushing for the controversial pornography bill to be passed today, despite a threat by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) to boycott the move and rejection from several provinces.
The passage of the bill was made possible after eight of the 10 factions at the House accepted the draft on Tuesday. The PDI-P walked out of the deliberation process and the Prosperous Peace Party (PDS)
"I hope the decision is taken constitutionally, whether it be through voting or deliberation, " the chairman of the Social Justice Party (PKS) said. (jp/dar)
