President appeals to all parties to respect agreement on Ahmadiyah

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono appealed to all parties to respect the agreement put in the joint ministerial decree over the Ahmadiyah issue.
He made the call during a meeting with chiefs of state institutions at the Supreme Audit Board building here on Monday, coordinating minister for people's welfare Agung Laksono who flanked the president at the meeting said.
Agung said President Yudhoyono touched the attack on Ahmadiyah Islamic sect members in Cikeusik, Pandeglang, Banten, on Sunday at the meeting.
"The President also touched the case just now, calling for us to refer back to what has been agreed upon in the decree," he said.
Regarding the incident that left three people dead and six others wounded Agung said that it would fully be referred to the police.
Basically, he said, all parties must respect the lives of the people and avoid violence in dealing with problems.
The chief of the Constitutional Court, Mahfud MD, meanwhile said to prevent the incident from recurring fair justice must be enforced against those involved in the incident.
The minister of religious affairs, the minister of domestic affairs and the attorney general issued a joint decree in 2008 which calls for Ahmadiyah followers to stop all their activities considered against Islam.
The decree however does not ban the existence of Ahmadiyah in the country.
The government through the coordinating ministry of political, security and legal affairs had condemned the violence in Banten on Sunday. (dar)
