A number of prominent clerics have been tipped to chair the country’s largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama in place of KH Hasyim Muzadi, who has called it quit.
Habaib Syarief Utsman Yahya of Cirebon in West Java, KH Musthofa Bisri of Rembang in Central Java and former religious affairs minister Moch. Tholchah Hasan are dubbed strong contenders for the top post.<>
“The names were touted by the majority of representatives of NU regional chapters. There were other names, but support for them was insignificant,” NU youth figure Nuruzzaman said at the conclusion of a national meeting on Saturday.
The meeting was held to prepare for the NU national congress, scheduled for Jan. 25-31, 2009 in the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar.
Nuruzzaman said candidates for the NU top executive job would be selected by a team made up of prominent NU youth figures.
He said the Muslim group was looking for a leader who would keep NU from practical politics and restore the public’s trust in the organization.
“NU elite have now taken a distance from followers in the grassroots. They no longer pay attention to problems facing the people but their political struggle,” Nuruzzaman said. (jp/dar)
