The emergence of radicalism should be avoided and fought together all out, Vice President Boediono said here on Saturday.
In his remarks to open a "Global Peace Leadership Conference 2010," organized by the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), the vice president said the tendency of the emergence of radicalism was of great danger if it was allowed to flourish.<<>;br />
"Radicalism is a real threat with a potential to disintegrate the life of society if nothing has to be done about it," the vice president said.
According to Boediono, radicalism still persisted in Indonesia and in other countries.
Even he was of the opinion that inter-civilization conflict was getting stronger and once it took over our way of thinking, it would lead us into destruction.
The vice president said it should be observed that in certain cases, democratic space and freedom of expression were misused by certain group of people to create hostility and hatred against a particular religion.
He said the controversy of cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammad, published in Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten on September 30, 2005, had provoked retaliation from radical group.
The radicals, according to him, were usually vocal and although they were of small community, they spoke loud as if they tried to sink the silent majority.
"The silent majority in general is made up of civil society but at certain time this group has to be in one accord to reject the presence of radicalism," the vice president said. (dar)
