The leader of the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, warned on Friday that a U.S. pastor's plan to burn the Quran threatened global peace.
“This threatens peace and international security. This is something that endangers harmony among religious people,“ Yudhoyono said in a nationally televised address at the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.r />
“I'm of course aware of the reported cancellation of the deplorable act by Terry Jones. However none of us can be complacent until such a despicable idea is totally extinguished.
“Therefore I continue to urge the government and people of the United States to ensure the prevention of such an incomprehensible, irrational and immoral act.“
Jones earlier announced he had cancelled Saturday's ceremony, but when his claims of a deal over a proposed Islamic cultural center in New York dissolved, he threatened to go ahead.
“The American people do not want the mosque there, and, of course, Muslims do not want us to burn the Quran,“ he said, referring to plans to build a Muslim outreach center near the site of the Sept. 11 attacks in New York.
The imam leading the New York project quickly denied any agreement to move the planned center. Yudhoyono has also written to Barack Obama to urge the U.S. president to intervene to stop the Quran burning, saying it would damage Obama's attempts to mend relations with the Muslim world.
Indonesia is theoretically secular but 80% of its 240 million people are Muslims. Violence by radical Islamists against Indonesian Christians and other religious minorities has been on the rise in recent months, but Yudhoyono said he was firmly committed to interfaith harmony.
“All of us without exceptions, and also the entire Indonesian nation, have a strong commitment to peace, harmony and tolerance among nations, religions and people,“ he said.
