Former legislator Slamet Effendy Yusuf, one of seven candidates running for the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) chairmanship, says he has the support of at least 70 percent of NU branches.
“I have solid support from many regional and provincial NU branches, mostly in Eastern Indonesia,” Slamet said in Makassar, South Sulawesi on Wednesday.<<>br />
He denied claims he was bluffing to put of the other contenders.
“Others may make their claims but what I just said was based on facts. I was a politician, I know how to calculate political support,” Slamet said as quoted by The Jakarta Post.
Slamet acknowledged that his political experience as a legislator for the Golkar Party had been very beneficial for his candidacy.
“But that doesn’t mean NU should allow practical politics. Political skills must be used to develop this organization, instead,” he said.
Seven NU chairman candidates will compete to garner support from 555 votes. The votes will come from 511 regional branches, 33 provincial branches, and 11 international branches of the organization.
The other six candidates are Said Aqil Siradj, Ahmad Bagja, Salahuddin Wahid, Masdar Farid Mas'udi, Ali Maschan Musa and the youngest candidate, Ulil Abshar-Abdalla. (dar)
