After issuing an edict that bans begging, the Indonesian Ulema Council in the East Java town of Pasuruan has now outlawed street fund-raising for disrupting public order.
Chairman of the council Nurul Huda said Friday the edict that forbids street fund-raising, which was issued on Aug. 30, followed findings that people who collect donations on the streets for the construction of mosques cause traffic congestion.<>
“They place an oil barrel in the middle of the street and ask motorists to slow down, so that they can ask for donations. Many motorists have complained about the practice,” Nurul said as quoted by The Jakarta Post, adding that there were reports of people intentionally sideswiping cars whose owners refused to donate.
Nurul said the practice was unacceptable as it endangered not only the fund-raisers but also other people who used the roads. (dar)
