President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asked ulema (Muslim scholars) on Sunday to help improve the morality of some Indonesian people, hoping the country will make progress in all aspects of life, including their moral value.
"I sincerely hope that ulema will always be in the forefront of the struggle to rescue the morality, etiquette and characters of our nation," the President said when opening the 8th National Congress of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) at the Jakarta Convention Center.
Yudhoyono said Indonesia was facing the issues of morality, wisdom and etiquette.
One of the worrying issues was porn videos which made the people upset in recent months, he said.
He said the porn video case was a tragedy that must be prevented.
"Let`s prevent the worrying tragedy from recurrence," he was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
The head of state noted that some of the people had often ignored morality as they were too busy discussing politics and the economy.
He asked all sides to respect legal and social norms in the country.
Ulema should set an example to the entire nation, he said.
The MUI congress was a good momentum to improve the morality and character of the nation, he said.
The President said Ulema must be empowered to make Indonesia prosperous and religious.
"I hope that MUI can play a greater role particularly in creating a tranquil and religious life," he said. (dar)
