Youth group to send 30,000 members to NU anniversary

The Anshor Youth Movement (GP Anshor) says it will dispatch 30,000 security officers of its Banser unit to secure the commemoration of the 85th anniversary of Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), in Jakarta.
The commemoration is scheduled to take place at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Central Jakarta on Sunday noon, and is expected to draw up to 200,000 participants from Java and Lampung.
GP Anshor chairman Nusron Wahid briefed the 30,000 members of the youth wing of NU on Sunday morning in the eastern parking lot of the stadium, Antara reported.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has been scheduled to officiate the event, which is expected to be attended by a number of Cabinet ministers and state officials, as well as foreign ambassadors to Indonesia.
Anniversary steering committee chairman As’ad Said Ali said the NU would discuss in the event the latest issues concerning religious life in Indonesia, especially in regards to the emergence of radical movements committing their actions on behalf of Islam. (dar)
