The involvement of a large number of young generations in drugs must immediately be addressed by initiating positive activities. Efforts of preventing and eradicating drug addiction is not enough by merely involving the police.

Deputy chairman of the West Sumatera's NU Regional Board (PWNU) H A. Khusnun Aziz made the remarks as speaking at a preaching competition held by the NU Students Association (IPNU) of Padangpariaman at the grave complex of Sheikh Burhanuddin Ulakan on Saturday.<>

According to Khusnun Aziz one of factors causing the large number of young circles that involve themselves in drugs was lack of awareness in using time for positive activities.

Whereas, he said, such activities were extremely important to enhance their achievements and skills in meeting any emerging obstacle.

"That's why, the preaching competition is very important to be organized by IPNU in both preventing and keeping young generation away from drug abuse," he said.

He asserted that the competition was purposefully a starting point for participants to be preachers being capable of helping meet social demands, saying that a professional preacher could live life amid social surroundings.

"Because this activity is positive, every year it should be carried out. I wll prepare a rotating trophy so that such event can be held every year," Khusnun Aziz said.

While assistant I of the Padangpariaman administration Drs Bahrkiman said that santri (those are studying in pesantren/Islamic boarding schools) and students grouped under the IPNU could expectedly be the pioneer in their community.

He said that the duty of IPNU was how to maintain and preserve religious values and take into account of the spirit so-called Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah. (arm)
