Medan as the capital of North Sumatra, January this year, is not the same as usual. Along main roads across the city there have been flags and attributes littered with green colors. The city has now extremely become such a green region.

There are no great events such as congress, conference, national meeting of a party, and so on. The "green" scene is not also aimed at welcoming a top official of the country. Rather it is aimed at welcoming an anniversary of the birth of the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).<>

On coming 3rd February, the Nahdliyin-based organization would celebrate its 82nd anniversary. Nahdliyin (NU followers) throughout the city are rejoicing in welcoming the much-awaited event that is also celebrated across Indonesia.

The NU Online's Muhammad Syafii in Medan, reported that the roads littered with the green flags and attributes were Bundaran Majestic on Jalan Gatot Subroto, in front of the governor office located on Jalan Diponegoro, and in front of the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) office of North Sumatra on Jalan Imam Bonjol and many other areas in the province.

"We hope people in Medan to further recognize NU and activities of the NU's 82nd Anniversary and show both the intensity and the identity of NU in North Sumatera," organizing committee chief of the NU anniversary of the North Sumatera NU Regional Board, M Arifin Matondang said here on Thursday (9/1)

He explained the installing of the NU flags was symbolically carried out by the Chairman of Supreme Council of the North Sumatra PWNU, H Abdul Wahab Daliumthe, who is also spokesman of the North Sumatra DPRD.

"The themes we take up in the banners are in line with the manual book of the national committee of the NU's 82nd Anniversary, namely "NU creates Islam Rahmatan Lil Alamin (Blessings for the universe)," Arifin said.

He added on the sidelines of the istighosah approximately attended by around 100 Nahdliyin on coming 3 February, there would be reportedly a teleconference with the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) at Jakarta's Bung Karno Stadium. (rif)
