Message from Syrian ulema to Indonesian Muslims

A number of former students from Indonesia joined in Sham-Indonesia Alumni Association (Alsyami) held a meeting on Monday (9/1).

Held in Tazakka Islamic boarding school (pesantren) Batang, the meeting was aimed at responding and examining the situation in Syria and its potential impact to the country.

The meeting attended by the Grand Mufti of the capital Damascus, Sheikh Adnan Afyouni, resulted in a number of programs and recommendations, some of which would be submitted to the government through the House of Representatives Commission I, calling on the government to be proactive in resolving the Middle East crisis.

In addition to the Grand Mufti, present also at the occasion were Shaykh Riyad Bazo of the Lebanon fatwa council and Sheikh Omar Dieb of the Ahmad Kuftaro University of Damascus Syria.

Previously they had also attended the Maulid Nabi commemoration in Pekalongan at the Kanzus Sholawat building along with Habib Lutfi bin Yahya, President Joko Widodo, the Army Commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo, and National Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian.

Sheikh Afyouni as the keynote speaker, explained more about the latest developments in Syria, such as the movement of national reconciliation that is being promoted by the Syrian people along with Muslim scholars.

He expressed thanks for the support from the Indonesian government and people to Syria, calling on all those present at the meeting and Muslims to maintain Indonesia with the values of Islam rahmatan lil 'alamin.

"Never easily be provoked, never be scattered," he said, adding that did expect Indonesia not to experience the same fate as that happened in other Muslim countries.

Several other issues discussed in the meeting were about the glorification of the fall of the city of Aleppo from the hands of rebels and irregularities committed by a humanitarian aid agency for being accused of having distributed the humanitarian aid to the militias and combatants in Syria.

Also attending the meeting were chairman of Alsyami Ahmad Fathir Hambali, Secretary General of Alsyami Muhammad Aromadloni, and several members of Alsyami and scholars from Syria. (Fathoni/Masdar)
