NU students told to combine acquired and presensial knowledges

Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Prof. Dr. Nasaruddin Umar, called on NU students to be able to use both acquired knowledge (ilmu husuli) and presensial knowledge (ilmu hudhuri) in dealing with any academic research.<>

The NU Supreme Council member made the statement on the sildelines of a meeting to launch a new graduate program, the Department of Islamic History and culture, concentrating on Islam Nusantara of the Jakarta's Nahdlatul Ulama High Institute for Islamic Studies (STAINU) at the NU headquarters in Jakarta, Wednesday (3/7).

The husuli method, he said, was that separating the subject of knowledge ('alim) and the object of knowledge (Ma'lum).

"The hushuli method is a method that relies on logic," he said.

According to Nasaruddin,the hudhuri method is a method that does not separate between object and subject. Human as the subject is equipped with internal faculties that allow him to access something deep within himself.

He said the hudhuri method believed all things could be known by deepening inner abilities.

"Hopefully both husuli and hudhuri methods could be combined and imprinted on our students minds," he said.

In addition, Nasaruddin also explained that Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) were the most advanced institutions widely imitated abroad. the pesantren system has become a superior school system in the UK and Australia.

At the occasion, General Chairman of NU KH Said Aqil Siradj delivered his scientific oration on "The The Urgency of Archipelagic (Nusantara) Islamic Studies".

Present also at the meeting were a number of ministers, such as the State Ministry for Development of Disadvantaged Regions Helmi Faisal Zaini, the Minister of Manpower Muhaimin Iskandar, the Minister for Housing Djan Farid, and Chairman of STAINU Jakarta KH Mujib Qulyubi.
