Muslim intellectuals to develop 'i-mosque' network

The Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI) says it wants to develop a digital “i-mosque” network to expand the role of the nation’s mosques.
“It is an effort to build an Islamic civilization,” ICMI chairman Ilham Akbar Habibie said on Thursday as quoted by as quoted by tempo.co.id.
He said that the i-mosque program would revivify the oft-forgotten social and public functions of mosque, expanding their roles as education centers, a healthcare clinics and cooperatives.
“Mosques are not merely places of worship,” he said.
Ilham said that the program would use i-net, a communication network connecting Indonesia’s mosquea, so people could share Islamic teachings and ICMI data.
Indonesia is home to 900,000 mosques, according the Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI), the Pancasila Muslim Amalbhakti Institute and Islamic Dawah Foundation, although there may be up to an additional 500,000 unregistered mosques. (jp/dar)
