Jakarta, NU Online
Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the country's largest Islamic organization, doubts that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's will replace underperforming Cabinet ministers, saying that political parties dictate the government and have taken it hostage to steer it away from the people's interests, former NU leader KH Hasyim Muzadi says.
Hasyim said that a reshuffle would not directly improve the lives of the people. "The [political situation] is like having a presidential Cabinet with a parliamentary flavor. The Cabinet reshuffle is under heavy pressure from the parliament," Hasyim said, equating parliamentarian pressure to the House of Representatives, which is controlled by political parties.
Hasyim said Yudhoyono would be directly challenging the parties by replacing ministers who were members of the coalition parties.
"The more he is afraid of the coalition [parties], the more he loses popularity among the people," he said as quoted by The Jakarta Post. "Please, don't make any promises, since the people have become bored with unrealized words." (dar)
