The Indonesian Muslim Workers Union (Sarbumusi) of Nahdlatul Ulama called for a solidarity act to collect coins for Prita Mulyasari, a mother of two, who is now undergoing court processes due to an allegedly defamation case.
The housewife who was prosecuted for writing a complaint email regarding a bad hospital service, was found guilty for defaming a private hospital by the Tangerang High Court. The court ordered her to pay a fine of Rp. 204 M (US$ 21,680) to OMNI Internasional Alam Sutera hospital.<>
Chairman of Sarbumusi H Djunaidi Ali told NU Online here on Monday that all collected coins would be given to the court as both protest and criticism over the bad performance of judicial institutions in Indonesia.
"Let's hope to see the coins will be in one truck," Djunaidi said with a smile, saying that Sarbumusi would circulate solidarity boxes to NU institutions, autonomous bodies, committees (lajnah) and representative boards of Sarbumusi in Jakarta such as IMCO, Indoplat and Pronal.
Djunaidi reiterated that Sarbumi strongly denounced the court decision against Prita, saying that the sum in form of coins as part of strong protest against the court decision.
While, the Indonesian community of internet users have recently been called on to join the same campaign run for helping Prita Mulyasari.
"The calculation as to how much coins have been collected is not yet carried out. The action actually underscores people's support to Prita instead of the sum gathered," said a spokesperson of blog community Ari Juliano on December 5. (nam)
