Deputy Chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH As'ad Said Ali said, the spirit of patriotism and obedience to the religious teachings became an integral part and were inseparable from one another, adding that it was inherited by the NU clerics (ulema) from Prince Diponegoro and his troops.<>
"Patriotism and religiosity, the two are one entity and are the core teachings of Prince Diponegoro," he said on the sidelines of a meeting to discuss the books titled "The Power of Prophecy (Kuasa Ramalan)" and "The Brigade of Ulema-Santri and Jihad Resolution" at the NU headquarters, Jl. Kramat Raya 164, Jakarta, Tuesday (21/1).
As'ad said, the main spirit of Prince Diponegoro's resistance fueling the spirit of pesantren circles to fight against the invaders until the issuance of 1945 Jihad Resolution was fighting against injustice.
"Enforcing justice is number one. Due to the injustice, then we fight," he said, explaining the 1825-1830 Diponegoro War untill the issuance of Jihad Resolution in 1945.
According to As'ad, the struggle of Prince Diponegoro and his troops was continued by the pesantren circles in taking a stand against the ivaders to gain the Indonesian independence.
Moreover, the movement of ulema in the early 20th century in realizing independence was spearheaded by the disciples and descendants of Prince Diponegoro and his troops.
"(Prince) Diponegoro has spawned a network of ulema, and the network later became NU (that was established on January 31st 1926)," he said.
"Kiai Sholeh Darat, for example, the grandson of Mbah Mutamakkin, is one of the Diponegoro commanders," he said.
He added that the book written Milal Bizawie detailed the deployment of Diponegoro's troops to give birth to generations of outstanding ulema, such as Kiai Hasyim Asy'ari and KH Wahab Chasbullah.
The book review was attended by the writers such as Peter Carey and Zainul Milal Bizawie. Present also at the occasion were the writer of "Atlas Wali Songo" Agus Sunyoto, and the writer of "Pesantren Studies" Ahmad Baso.
