Kiai Said explains four conditions for well-run NU organizations

The General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siroj (Kiai Said), said that if the four conditions were met, the NU organizations could run well. First, NU must be proportional and professional. In this case, he quoted the Qur'an Surah Al-Isra verse 36: "And do not follow something that you do not know. Because of hearing, sight and conscience, all of that will be held accountable".

 

"Don't include people who are not professional. In our culture there is still a culture of so-called ewuh pekewuh," he said during the 2021 NU National Plenary Conference of Alim Ulama (Munas) and the Grand Conference (Konbes) at the Grand Sahid Jaya Hotel, Jakarta, Sunday (26/9/2021).

 

Sons of the prominent figures, supporters, or big donors for their contributions are appointed as board members. In fact, they are not yet known for their credibility and expertise.

 

Second, NU must be open and transparent. This means that there should be transparency in running the organization, especially in the field of funding. He emphasized that PBNU's finances were audited by external auditors and could be seen and accounted for in and out of money.

 

"This is (a must) if we want to improve the quality of our organization. It is hard and bitter," said the leader of the Al-Tsaqafah Islamic Boarding School, Ciganjur, South Jakarta.

 

Furthermore, he explained that the consequence of openness was to build cooperation with all parties. Moreover, NU has abundant congregational strength. If all this could be coordinated properly, they could gather tremendous power.

 

Therefore, Kiai Said emphasized that it was necessary to build cooperation not only with NU internals, but also with external parties.

 

"Not only with internal NU, but also with non-Muslims. Working together to build a working team. Cooperation is important for goodness," he said.

 

Another condition for the progress of the NU organization is shared responsibility. Not only on five years in conference forums or congresses, but on others after the agenda.

 

Seeing the implementation of the 2021 NU Munas and Konbes, Kiai Said admitted that he was very proud and grateful for knowing these forums could produce extraordinary decisions.

 

"This shows that all of us are at all times, at all times ready for deliberation, discussion, and responding to problems quickly and appropriately," he concluded.
