"Those who have smartphones do not necessarily become smart"

Chairman of Lawmaking Body (Rais Syuriyah) of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Australia and New Zealand Nadirsyah "Gus Nadir" Hosen said that the rapid growth of information technology did not change the  mindset of fundamentalists to be modern.

"Today's era of technology, does not change fundamentalists to be modern. Those who have smartphones do not necessarily become smart," said Gus Nadir greeted laughter of the audience at a discussion held at the Ansor headquarters, Jakarta, Monday (25 / 9).

Gus Nadir explained that all this could be seen from the emergence of hoax and hate speeches. Many people are not smart and do not pay attention to the ethics of being engaged in social media.

"When a young man insults Gus Mus (KH Musthofa Bisri) or when Professor M Quraish Shihab is told to recite a shahadah by a netizen, they do not use ethics in media. They do not understand who they insult," Gus Nadir said.

Millenial generation is more communicating through the (smartphones) screen than face to face directly.

The law lecturer at Monash Law School Australia hoped, the ethical values in social media should be studied and are also the task of Ansor to disseminate it; to propagate that Islam is polite and friendly.

"This is the duty of Ansor cadres. This event (discussion) should not stop here," he added.
