Hundreds of houses in  Kapai Sesak and Krueng Luah villages, Trumon Timur subdistrict,  Aceh Selatan regency, were badly inundated by the overflow of the river in the area on Tuesday (3/10), but that had been no immediate reports on fatalities or material damage.

The flood waters have reached up to two meters high, especially in two villages in Trumon Timur regency, some 100 kilometers west of Tapaktuan, capital of Aceh Selatan regency, a local government official said.

<>Kapai Sesak village head Alfandi Syahputra said that the flash flood was triggered by the overflow of Singkil river on the border region of  Aceh Selatan and Aceh Singkil regencies on Tuesday at 4 am.

He said heavy torrential rain fell on the Gunung Leuser National Park since Monday afternoon. The flash flood had also inundated the  Medan-Tapaktuan main road with the flood water reaching 1.5 meters high.

Trumon Timur subdistrict chief Said Azhar said in his report to  Aceh Selatan regency chief Machsalmina Ali that the flash flood caused a disruption of the Medan - Tapaktuan road traffic.

"Two hundred meters of the main road can be covered only by heavy vehicles like dump trucks," he said as reported by the national news agency Antara.

At least 200 homes in Kapai Sesak and Krueng Luah villages are badly inundated with the flood waters reaching up to 2 meters high, causing billions of rupiah in material loss, the subdistrict head said.

In the meantime, the Aceh Selatan regency chief expressed worry about the possibility of an after-flood as the weather in the biggest nutmeg producing area in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province is still full of rain and thick clouds.

In the meantime, relief aid from the  Aceh Selatan regency administration continued to pour in like rice and side dishes, for the flash flood victims.

The flash flood has also killed domestic animals and badly damaged hundreds of hectares of farmland. (dar)
