Ahead of the elections, Deputy Regent of Rembang H Abdul Hafidz called on all NU followers (Nahdliyin) to maintain social harmony and help the government hold the much-awaited events peacefully.<>
In a meeting to commemorate the death of Sheikh Rozzak Saifullah and Sheikh Abdul Rahman nin Imron in Mojorembun village, Kaliori subdistrict, Rembang, Central Java, the regent said that disputes between residents were more likely to happen because of different political choices.
Hafidz also called on people to vote for their hopefuls and despite no pocket money when they want to cast votes in the upcoming election to elect members of both national and regional legislatures that will take place on 9 April 2014
Hafidz also said to make the election more neutral, the people shoud be committed to avoiding the politics of money to determine the future leader. If not, they could receive the mony but should vote for their hopefuls in accordance with their conscience. The reason is that giving a mandate to the leader who is not trustworthy, the NU board member added, was a sin.
"It would be noble if people do not want to accept money politics, which often influence their choice during the election," he said.
On April 9, Indonesians will vote for their legislators at the national, provincial, and district levels. Exactly three months later, on July 9, Indonesians will choose their next president.
These elections, which are held every five years and are run by the Indonesian Election Commission (Komisi Pemilihan Umum), are massive undertakings. The country’s voting system is complicated, and twelve political parties will vie for the attention of 190 million eligible voters. Much is at stake.
