Qur’an interpreter expert Quraish Shihab stated, not all lies are prohibited. There are certain circumstances that lies are tolerated, even obligatory.

“There moments when lies are tolerated, even being a mandatory,” said Quraish in a video that uploaded on YouTube by Najwa Shihab, on Monday (10/15).

Prof Quraish stated someone was permitted to lie if there are intention to protect innocent people from aggression by bad guys. As an example, A has known where B, an innocent man or woman who being chased by C, a bad guy. Then C asked A where the position of B . However, A lied and replied that he didn’t know where B at that time. The reason is to protect B.

“The lies here is tolerated, even recommended to protect an innocent person,” said the Director of Quranic Study Center.

Prof Quraish added, the lying was allowed in the reason of improving relationship between conflicted people.

“As an example, A and B are quarreling, and C visited and said that one of the parts has well meaning. It is allowed,” said the writer of al-Misbah Qur’an interpretation book.

Not only that, he continues, lies also allowed in the context of family relationship. As an example, the husband said something that he does not own or something that not exist to please his wife.

“Although his wife is not pretty, he said, “You are my queen all the time. That is a lying, but permitted, but permitted,” he finished the speech. (Muchlishon)
