Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) have been considered as the fortress for the defense of the Islamic community in addition to being centers for the spread of the Islamic faith.<>

The statement was made by member of the Rabithah Ma'ahid Islamiyah, a Nahdlatul Ulama-owned pesantren association, of East Java, Dr. Abdul Kadir Riyadi in Surabaya recently.

According to Kadir, pesantren have such functions as a educational institution, as an institution of public service and as an institution of struggle.

He said, as an institution of struggle, almost all pesantren, during the war for independence, "were involved in fighting the Dutch," either directly as guerilla cells or as training grounds for figthers.

"Now the focus of struggle has returned to a peaceful one concentrating on howto build education and morality," he said.

The lecturer at the Surabaya's Islamic State University Sunan Ampel said that on the verge of the 20th century, there was a strong connection between pesantren and Mecca.

"In the time, pesantren leaders, clerics (kiai), were major individuals in the international Islamic comunities," he said, adding that there were many Arabic language texts written by the kiai and many learned men from all Islamic nations studying under them.

Kadir said that prior to the 20th century that most institutions of Islamic education had been exclusively religious in nature, "but with the emergence of secular education they have faced challenges."
