Leaders of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) have an important role in shaping a social identity due to their lifestyle example and preaching.<>

Member of the Nahdlatul Ulama Scholars Association (ISNU) of Lamongan, Achmad Shuyuti, M.Si, made the remarks on the sidelines of an interview with NU Online here recently.

According to the lecturer of the Lamongan Islamic University (UNISLA), their involvement in pesantren are examples for Islamic living.

"In this context, their identity shapes the identity of the community," he said, adding that the pesantren people (kiai, their santri and other followers) were inseparable part of broader religious communities.

He was of the opinion that the identity of pesantren people was not limited to religion because they engaged the identity whole-heartedly in seeking to islamize it as best as possible.

On this stand, he added, Ahlussunnah wal jamaah (Aswaja) was an identity marker that ties the pesantren world to the world-wide Islamic community in addition to simultaneously making a claim of religious authenticity.

He also said that Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) as the world's largest Muslim organization was a national one that ties pesantren and kiai together.
