A number of 57 students participated in a new member recruitment (Mapaba) of the Indonesian Muslim Students Movement (PMII) at An Nawawi State Institute for Islamic Studies (STAIAN), Berjan, Purworedjo, at Taslimiyah Islamic boarding school, Lubang Lor village, Butuh subdistrict, Purworejo.<>

The Mapaba organizing committee chief, Muhammad Arifin said the activities held for 3 days must be followed by all participants who will become the members of PMII.

Arifin said, all participants were given materials on the history of the nation, Islam Nusantara, self analysis, gender, students and social responsibility , basic values of movement and all matters about the organization of PMII.

"All materials aim to provide a provision for the students to act and actualize themselves in the future following their membership in the PMII," he said here on Thursday (17/10).

Arifin added the materials should be the foundation for the PMII's new members to raise their "social awareness and intelligence more than other students in general."

"The challenge of today's students is how they have responsibility to build their environment with academic skills and the knowledge that they have," he said.

Arifin said, this was part of the PMII's answer to the phenomenon of students that tend to be apathetic to their environmental conditions for not being concerned with the social problems.

Indonesian Moslem Students Movement (PMII) is a university students-movement organization which was established in 17th April 1960 (21st Syawal 1379 H), when the struggle of political revolution in Indonesia was flaring up.

As a young intellectual basis of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), PMII was declared on the premise that the Republic of Indonesia since the struggle-for-independence era, has always been in need of escort of young intellectuals who uphold religious values and  comprehend the cultural roots and the wisdom of traditions, and are tolerant and inclusive towards the acculturation process in the country.

PMII is committed to intellectual movement, religious, and nationality. Its commitment becomes the identity of organization which contributes moral and spiritual power to signify the national life in order to establish the principles of social justice, to implement popular sovereignty (democracy), and to preserve the integrity of Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).
